There are numerous reasons to consider buying a mattress made here in the USA. Mattresses manufactured domestically typically ship faster than those from abroad, and purchasing them helps support local jobs and the economy. In many instances, they are also held to stricter quality and safety standards, so you can rest easy knowing that every layer of your bed meets stringent guidelines before it hits your bed frame.
Our testing team put dozens of American-made mattresses through their paces, spending hours evaluating each one for edge support, responsiveness, pressure relief, cooling, and overall durability. Thanks to our data, I was able to curate a list of stellar beds that prove U.S. manufacturing still delivers quality and performance.
Our team of certified sleep science coaches and professional mattress testers has helped more than 60,000 readers find their perfect night’s sleep using our evidence-based testing methods.
To ensure our findings are both medically sound and scientifically supported, we consulted with our chief medical advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, and the Sleepopolis chief medical product tester, Dr. Joe Tedesco, DPT, OCS, ATC, CSCS. Together, we confirmed that each mattress on this list promotes proper spinal alignment, balanced support, and long-term comfort.
Read on to see which American-made mattresses made it onto the list.
Our top pick
The Helix Midnight is my pick for the best mattress made in the USA, thanks to its exceptional comfort, support, and competitive price. This American-made hybrid combines plush memory foam with a sturdy coil system to create a balanced feel that suits a wide range of sleepers. Our testers praised its stable perimeter and ability to properly align the spine, awarding it a 4 out of 5 or higher in edge support and back-sleeping pressure relief.

What I Looked For in USA-Made Mattresses
Using our tried and true review methodology, our team tested each mattress to gauge its comfort and longevity. These are the three most important categories I prioritized while curating this list of the best American-made mattresses.
Edge Support: Strong edge support prevents premature sagging and helps a mattress maintain its shape and stability over time. Reinforced sides also expand the usable sleep surface, allowing sleepers to sit or lie comfortably along the perimeter. To measure edge support, we sat and lay along each mattress’s border, recording sinkage under a controlled stack of weights.
Pressure Relief: Deep pressure relief effectively prevents tension and discomfort in sensitive areas (including the hips, shoulders, and lower back). We have testers across different weight categories lie on each mattress in side, back, and stomach positions to assess how evenly it distributes body weight and cushions key pressure points.
Cooling: A mattress that retains too much heat can disrupt sleep quality. Using a thermal gun, we measured the surface temperature of each mattress before and after five minutes of lying down. Mattresses that warmed less than the 7.14-degree average earned higher cooling scores.

This is a hybrid mattress, meaning it combines soft foams and sturdy coils for a balance of comfort and support.
Firmness
We rated the Helix Midnight a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. This means it’s slightly softer than the industry standard (6.5 out of 10).

Side Sleepers
Ideal for average weight side sleepers.
Back Sleepers
Ideal for back sleepers of all weights.
Couples
This bed has great motion isolation, so you shouldn’t feel your partner tossing and turning at night.
Pros of the Helix Midnight
Back sleepers should get some cushioning in the lumbar region, and the coils will help keep their spines neutrally aligned.
Side sleepers should experience nice pressure relief and contouring at their shoulders and hips. For extra pressure relief, we recommend the Helix Midnight Luxe, the standard Helix Midnight’s luxury version.
The Helix Midnight has low motion transfer, which means partners aren’t likely to feel each other moving around at night.
The Midnight is a responsive mattress, so it’s ideal for combination sleepers.
You can return your bed after the 30-day “break-in” period and before the trial period ends for a full refund.
The Helix Midnight is amongst Helix’s line of six standard mattresses. It’s known for its more balanced feel, allowing it to accommodate a wide range of sleepers. We also recommend it for couples, as it scored well on our motion isolation, responsiveness, edge support, and cooling tests. For a plusher and more cooling version of this mattress, see the Helix Midnight Luxe. Learn more in our video review.
What our tester says:
“I would recommend this mattress for side or back sleepers because it’s supportive, without putting pressure on your joints.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
The Helix Midnight earns my top pick as the best overall mattress made in the USA because it is thoughtfully designed for a wide range of sleepers and features high-quality components that should last for a long time. This hybrid model combines contouring memory foam with a supportive coil system to deliver comfort, pressure relief, and stability in equal measure. During testing, our team praised its performance in the edge support and back-sleeping pressure relief categories, awarding it a 4 out of 5 in both.
Unlike many other affordable mattresses in its price range (often around $1,000 when on sale), the Midnight doesn’t cut corners on craftsmanship or materials. Tester Dan Caffrey praised its consistently supportive surface and perimeter, giving it a 4 out of 5 in edge support, a good sign of long-term stability and resistance to sagging.
The Helix Midnight’s construction shows strong edges.
“I could hardly feel the layers collapse beneath me as I lay on the edge,” Dan said. “I never felt like I was going to fall off. I think people could sleep comfortably along the perimeter of this bed.”
The consistent support also helped it earn another 4 out of 5 for back-sleeping pressure relief. Thanks to its soft mattress topper and supportive innerspring coils, Dan found that it offered the right mix of contouring and support to keep his spine aligned and lower back cushioned.
“The Midnight does what any quality hybrid mattress should do,” Dan said. “This bed did a great job of balancing softness and support around my lower lumbar spine.”
While the Helix Midnight performed well across the board during testing, its memory foam comfort layer can retain some heat. It is also less responsive than other hybrid mattresses, so it may not be ideal for hot sleepers or combination sleepers who frequently toss and turn.
Interested in learning more about the Helix Midnight? Check out our full Helix Midnight mattress review to see how this model performed on all our tests. For a more responsive option with better cooling, consider upgrading to the Helix Midnight Luxe.

Hot Sleepers
If you often overheat while you sleep, this mattress should help you stay cool.
Back Pain
This bed is ideal for anyone suffering from back pain.
Back Sleeping
A great option for lightweight and average weight back sleepers.
Pros of the WinkBed
Back sleepers should get the support they need
It has a traditional, supportive feel
The WinkBed has cooling capabilities to help people who sleep hot
Sturdy edge support and good motion isolation make this a good choice for couples
The WinkBed is a luxury hybrid mattress. It has a similarly supportive and sturdy feel to a traditional innerspring mattress, but upgrades like a Euro top and cooling Tencel cover give it a touch of modern luxury. Available in three firmness levels, there is a WinkBed for just about every sleeper. And a responsive and bouncy feel makes it a great pick for combination sleepers. Learn more in our video review.
What our tester says:
“If you like the feel of a traditional innerspring mattress, the WinkBed could work for you. Since this bed offered great pressure relief around my lumbar region, I’d also recommend it to folks who suffer from lower back pain.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
The WinkBed is an exceptional hybrid mattress made right here in the USA. It offers a luxury, hotel-style feel with the balanced support and durability that hybrid lovers expect from a mattress in this category. While testing the Luxury Firm version of the WinkBed, we awarded it a 4 out of 5 or higher in our back-sleeping pressure relief and edge support categories.
The WinkBed combines plush memory foam layers with individually wrapped coils for pressure-relieving stability. Mattress tester Riley Otis found the Luxury Firm model particularly well-suited for back sleepers. She rated it 4.3 out of 5 for back pressure relief, noting its ability to maintain healthy spinal alignment while cushioning the lumbar region.
Our tester Riley Otis testing out the WinkBed in the back-sleeping position.
“Lying on my back on this mattress, I’m able to achieve optimal spinal alignment,” Riley said. “My hips and shoulders feel even, and it is providing some nice cushioning along my lumbar region.”
Riley also invited our chief medical product reviewer and licensed physical therapist, Dr. Joe Tedesco, to weigh in on the WinkBed mattress. He also praised its even, supportive feel.
“As a back sleeper, I approve of this mattress,” said Dr. Tedesco. “These sleepers need a mattress that is supportive enough to keep their spines in a neutral position, and this bed delivers on that front.”
The WinkBed’s supportive core also stretches to its perimeter, making it an excellent option for sleepers who sprawl out or sit along the sides of their mattress. Riley and her fellow mattress testers gave it a 4.4 out of 5 for edge support, praising its consistent stability from corner to corner.
While the WinkBed’s plush pillow top makes it feel like a luxury mattress, it also makes the surface slightly less responsive and warmer than other hybrids. That means it may not be the best pick for hot sleepers or those who frequently shift positions during the night to get comfortable.

The Bear Elite Hybrid uses foam and coils for a mix of support, cushioning, and cooling. While designed for athletes prioritizing wellness and recovery, sleepers of all activity levels can enjoy the many luxurious features. Enjoy zoned support for targeted relief, an “on top of” feel allowing for ease of movement, and cooling features throughout. For more information, watch our video review.
What our tester says:
“I’d recommend the Bear Elite Hybrid for most back and stomach sleepers.I think these sleepers will get the needed pressure relief and contouring around the lower back and hips. This mattress does a wonderful job at offering body contouring while still helping the sleeper stay elevated and lifted as well. The layers of foam should provide comfort while the coil system should offer lots of support.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and mattress tester
The American-made Bear Elite Hybrid has everything athletes need to sleep better and improve their recovery time. Its combination of pressure-relieving foams, supportive steel coils, and cooling technology delivers the restorative comfort active bodies need. Our in-house testing team rated the Bear Elite Hybrid 4 out of 5 in cooling, pressure relief, and edge support.
Athletes who tend to overheat after workouts or evening training sessions will appreciate the stellar cooling performance of the Bear Elite Hybrid.
One of the first things our testers noted was how the Bear Elite Hybrid was cooling them down. Mattress tester Sosha Lewis used a thermal gun to measure the surface temperature before and after lying on it for five minutes, and found that it rose by less than 5 degrees, thanks to its breathable design and phase change cooling materials.
“This bed stayed impressively cool during the thermal gun test,” said Sosha. “I had to dock half a point and give it a 4.5, because while it felt cool to the touch at first, that crispness faded slightly after lying on it. That said, I just finished a long workout, and it helped me cool down.”
Side and back sleepers alike will appreciate how the Bear Elite Hybrid provides deep contouring after a strenuous workout.
Dr. Joe Tedesco, chief medical product tester and licensed physical therapist, praised its pressure-relieving abilities during testing.
“The softness provides great contouring, but there is good firmness to support you still when you’re on your side,” said Dr. Tedesco. “I don’t notice any pressure buildup at all.”
Sosha, who also experiences lower back pain, found similar relief when lying on her back:
“It was as if this mattress was actively pulling the discomfort from my lumbar region,” Sosha said.
Overall, our testers gave the Bear Elite Hybrid a 4 out of 5 in back-sleeping pressure relief, which is above average among the mattresses we’ve reviewed. It also performed well in edge support, earning a 4.4 out of 5 for its stability when lying near the perimeter. However, Sosha noted its taller 14-inch profile might make sitting on the edge a bit awkward for shorter sleepers.

Cons of the Saatva

The Saatva’s coil-on-coil construction provides a classic innerspring feel. It’s a good option for combo sleepers, who will want to feel free to switch positions and avoid feeling “stuck” in the mattress. It comes in three firmness levels, so you should be able to find one that suits your needs. The white glove delivery Saatva provides is an added perk and will save you the headache of getting rid of your old mattress (they take it away for free!). For more information, watch our video review.
What our tester says:
“I think the Saatva is a great option for back sleepers, as the Luxury Firm model provides enough cushioning for their lumbar region, but also lots of support to keep their spine in a neutral alignment.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
As a company, Saatva manufactures all of its mattresses in the United States, and its flagship mattress, the Saatva Classic, is an American-made mattress that delivers the ideal balance of plush cushioning and robust support for back sleepers. During testing, I was impressed by its Euro top and dual layers of coils, and awarded the Saatva a 4 out of 5 or higher in edge support and back-sleeping pressure relief.
Back sleepers require an ultra-supportive mattress that provides a secure sleep surface from corner to corner. Strong edge-to-edge support ensures these sleepers receive the necessary support around their lower lumbar spines, even at the far edges of the mattress.
While lying on this mattress, I was impressed by how supportive it felt beneath my lower back. The Saatva Classic elevated my hips enough to keep my body in perfect alignment. I was also able to lie along the perimeter of the mattress without feeling unsteady or rolling off. I think this mattress would also be a great fit for couples who sleep near the edge of the bed and sleepers with mobility concerns who need a secure surface to bear down on while standing up in the morning. I gave the Saatva a near-perfect 4.8 out of 5 in the edge support category.
Our tester Kenny Timper testing out the Saatva in the back-sleeping position.
The lower lumbar lift the Saatva provides also translates to stellar pressure relief for back sleepers. When I was on the Saatva Classic on my back and stomach, I did not feel any awkward sinkage near my hips or lower body. I could feel the tension actively leaving my lower back, which is why I gave it a 4.3 out of 5 in the back-sleeping pressure relief category.
I also invited our chief medical product tester and licensed physical therapist, Dr. Joe Tedesco, to try the Saatva Classic and offer his professional opinion.
“On my back, I feel comfortable, and my spine is in a neutral position,” said Dr. Tedesco. “This could be a great choice for back sleepers with a lot of issues.”
The Saatva Classic is a home run for most back sleepers, but I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone. Its two layers of innerspring coils make it highly responsive and bouncy, which could be bad news for those who share a bed with a partner who is easily disturbed. If you toss and turn frequently at night, your partner is likely to feel every one of those movements.
Additionally, I think this mattress might be too firm for sleepers under 130 pounds. Sleepers in this category will likely require a model with more cushioning to prevent soreness in pressure-prone areas like their hips and shoulders.
For more information about the Saatva and long-term testing notes from one of our reviewers who brought this mattress home, head over to our full Saatva Classic mattress review. If you prefer a softer hybrid, try the Nectar Classic Hybrid instead.

Works for back sleepers who need good lumbar support
Side sleepers should appreciate the pressure relief
Full refund after 30 days and within the 120-night trial period
The Nolah Evolution’s hybrid construction offers the cushioning of memory foam with the responsiveness of coils. The Luxury Firm model is a good option for side and back sleepers due to its medium-firm feel, though there are Plush and Firm versions as well. Those who share a bed may also appreciate its low motion transfer, so you won’t be disturbed by a partner’s movements and its solid edge support to allow you to maximize surface area. For more information, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“I laid down to rest on this mattress on my back — my primary sleep position. I felt comfortable, but also appreciated the cozy, plush top of the bed. After some time lying on my back, I switched over to my side. I didn’t find this position quite as comfortable, as I did feel some slight pressure buildup in my shoulder.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer
The Nolah Evolution is a standout USA-made hybrid mattress built to support a wide range of sleep styles. Combination sleepers (those who switch between their back, side, and stomach throughout the night) need a bed that is supportive, bouncy, and breathable. The Nolah Evolution delivers on all three fronts, earning 4 out of 5 or higher in edge support, cooling, and responsiveness.
The Nolah Evolution combines sturdy coils with plush comfort foams, making it adaptable to nearly any position. Its strong edge support ensures the mattress remains stable whether you lie in the center or perched along the perimeter.
During testing, our expert product reviewers awarded the Luxury Firm version of the Nolah Evolution an excellent 4.6 out of 5 in edge support, praising its consistency from corner to corner.
“I feel plenty secure while lying on the edge of the Nolah,” said mattress tester Sosha Lewis. “Whether on my back, side, or stomach, the mattress feels comfortable and supportive, regardless of where I lie on it.”
Our tester Sosha Lewis testing out the edge support of the Nolah Evolution.
Temperature regulation is another strong point of the Nolah Evolution mattress, which may be a relief for combination sleepers who work up a sweat while moving around at night. Thanks to its breathable cooling cover and airflow-enhancing coils, the Evolution earned a 4.5 out of 5 in the cooling category.
“I own the previous version of the Nolah Evolution, and one of the main reasons we bought it is because my husband is such a hot sleeper,” Sosha said. “This new version offers the same, if not better, cooling. The organic cotton was cool to the touch, and I could feel heat leaving my body as I was on the Nolah.”
Most importantly for combination sleepers, however, is the Nolah Evolution’s exceptional responsiveness. During testing, Sosha and her fellow mattress testers found that the Evolution was easy to move around on, despite its soft, pressure-relieving cover layer. Our in-house team praised it for being easy to shift between sleeping positions and awarded it a 4 out of 5 in the responsiveness category.
The only drawback has little to do with the mattress itself; however, we gave Nolah a 3.8 out of 5 for customer experience due to its shorter 120-night trial period. This sleep trial is less generous than those offered by some competitors with comparable offerings. That said, they still offer a limited lifetime warranty.
Head over to our full Nolah Evolution mattress review for a complete performance breakdown of this mattress. For another highly responsive mattress with a more generous trial period, check out the Saatva Latex Hybrid instead.

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress combines a foam comfort layer and sturdy coils. This combination of materials makes it bouncy and easy to move around on. It comes in three firmness levels, and we recommend the Medium model for most back sleepers. It’s a great choice for shoppers who are looking for a new mattress on a budget. For more information, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“Given that the Signature Hybrid has some excellent bounce, I’d highly recommend this mattress for combination sleepers who often change positions multiple times throughout the night. I also think the Signature Hybrid could be a great fit for couples. You shouldn’t be overly disturbed by a restless partner on this bed, and it has nice, firm edge support.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is made in the company’s Phoenix, Arizona, factory, and is one of the best US-made options for couples. My fellow mattress testers and I were impressed by this hybrid model’s standout performance in cooling and edge support during testing, awarding it a 4.5 and 4.3 in each category, respectively.
As a hot sleeper, I was especially pleased with how well this bed regulated temperature throughout testing. I used a thermal gun to measure the heat retention of the mattress after resting on it for 5 minutes. The temperature rose by only 6 degrees, earning the Signature Hybrid a 4.5 out of 5 in cooling performance and making it a clear win for couples who tend to overheat.
Couples will also appreciate its reliable edge support, which maximizes usable space and makes it easier to move or sit along the sides. I gave the Signature Hybrid a 4.3 out of 5 in edge support, finding it just as supportive on the perimeter as in the center. For the most part, I found that it was just as supportive along the perimeter as it was in the center.
Our tester Kenny Timper conducting the partner test on the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid.
I felt some slight sinkage on my back near the edge of the bed, but I did not feel like I was going to fall off at any point. The only thing I would note is that the soft cover makes it a little more challenging to switch between different positions after sinking into it, which could prove to be a nuisance for some combination sleepers.
The Signature Hybrid shines in most categories, but it wasn’t the best fit for adjustable bases. We found that its innerspring coils made it too rigid to conform to the different settings of the adjustable base in our studio.
Head over to our full Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress review to learn more about this model and for insights from our chief medical product tester and licensed physical therapist, Dr. Joe Tedesco. If you’re a combination sleeper looking for a mattress that is easy to maneuver on, I would recommend the Birch Natural instead.

The Titan Plus mattress is a durable mattress made with heavy sleepers in mind. It’s firm and features heavy-duty coils and Titanflex foam that makes it bouncy and easy to move around on. We think that heavy back sleepers and stomach sleepers should be especially comfortable. For more information on the Titan Plus, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“I think the Titan Plus lives up to its name as a good mattress for heavier sleepers. It will offer them the deep compression support and durability they need.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
The Titan Plus is hand-built in Arizona for sleepers with larger bodies who require extra support without sacrificing comfort. Its heavy-duty construction can handle weights of 230 pounds or more, while offering exceptional comfort. During testing, we awarded the Titan Plus 4.5 stars or higher in edge support, motion isolation, and responsiveness.
Mattress tester Sosha Lewis awarded the Titan Plus an impressive 4.6 out of 5 in edge support, praising its reinforced perimeter and consistent feel across the surface. In other words, sleepers with larger bodies who gravitate toward the side of the bed will feel just as secure lying there as they do in the center.
One of our testers using weight plates to measure the Titan Plus’ edge support.
“The perimeter of the Titan Plus felt very secure across every sleeping position,” said mattress tester Sosha Lewis. “I found it easy to switch positions on the edge, and I wasn’t afraid of rolling out of bed when I flipped onto my side.”
Sturdy edges also hint at long-term durability, as Dr. Dasgupta explains. Our chief medical product tester and licensed physical therapist, Dr. Joe Tedesco, also praised the Titan Plus’s excellent pressure relief.
“I am normally a back sleeper, so I was surprised to see that I was more comfortable on my side on the Titan Plus,” Dr. Tedesco said. “While lying on my side, I didn’t feel any significant pressure buildup.”
Another rare achievement for such a firm hybrid is its dual success in motion isolation and responsiveness, where it scored a perfect 5 out of 5 in both categories. The Titan Plus not only limits motion transfer (a plus for couples) but also makes it easy to move and reposition during the night (a win for combination sleepers).
“Even though this is a very responsive mattress, I could easily jump on top of it without worrying about the motion rippling to the other side,” Sosha said. “My husband is a very restless sleeper, and the motion isolation on this bed makes me wish I could take it home.”
One thing to note about the Titan Plus is that it is firmer (7.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale) than the average mattress. That firmness level is ideal for heavier sleepers who need consistent support but may feel too rigid for lighter side sleepers (under 130 pounds) or those with sensitive joints.

The Plank Firm more than lives up to its name with its ultra-sturdy foams and supportive feel. While this bed certainly isn’t for everyone, it should be an ideal fit for back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and combination sleepers who want to feel more on top of their mattress than in it. For more information, check out our video review.
What our tester says:
“I think the Plank Firm is one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers. Both sides of the mattress, the firm side and extra firm side, should give these sleepers the support they need to keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should also be happy on the firm side of the Plank.” – Nichole Mondshein, lead reviewer and staff writer
Handcrafted in Arizona by Brooklyn Bedding, the Plank Firm mattress lives up to its name as one of the firmest models available. The Plank Firm is flippable and offers two firmness options: firm and extra-firm. Our testers found the extra-firm side especially impressive for its dependable lumbar support and stability. During testing, we gave this mattress a 4 out of 5 or higher in both edge support and cooling.
Extra-firm mattresses often resist sagging better than softer ones, and the Plank Firm is a prime example. Mattress tester Sosha Lewis awarded the extra-firm side a 4.4 out of 5 for edge support, noting its stability across different positions, even right along the perimeter.
“No matter where I lay on this mattress, I felt very supported on my side, back, and stomach,” Sosha said. “There was no point where I was afraid of rolling out of bed in any position.”
Though memory foam mattresses can sometimes retain heat due to their lack of ventilated innerspring coils, the Plank Firm performed surprisingly well in our cooling tests.
Using a thermal gun, mattress tester Riley Otis measured only a 5-degree increase in temperature after lying on it for five minutes on the extra-firm side; an impressive showing for a high-density memory foam model.
“I wouldn’t call the Plank Firm cool to the touch,” Riley said. “That said, it doesn’t feel stifling to me at all. I couldn’t notice the Plank warming up too much when lying on it.”
However, the Plank Firm’s ultra-dense feel and unwavering support come at the cost of contouring. Side sleepers or those with joint pain may find it too rigid to get comfy on. Motion isolation was another one of its weaker points: the firm side earned a 3.7 out of 5, meaning sleepers who are easily disturbed may feel some movement from a partner or pet.

Similar to the Birch Natural, the Birch Luxe Natural blends Talalay latex foam with sturdy coils that are zoned for support. We think it’s a good fit for back sleepers and stomach sleepers who enjoy a firmer bed. Its luxury upgrades include a softer cover with organic cotton and cashmere, plus the mattress has earned multiple certifications for safe production and materials. To learn more, see our video review.
What our tester says:
“I love that the Birch Luxe Natural is an eco-friendly model. I think a lot of people would find comfort in knowing there are no harmful chemicals in this bed and it’s made from organic materials. If you’re a back or stomach sleeper, I think the Birch Luxe could be a great option for you. It’s firm, yet breathable.” – Bridget Chapman, former senior product editor
The Birch Luxe Natural is a USA-made mattress that uses responsibly sourced materials to deliver a comfortable sleep experience that cuts down on emissions and is better for the environment. This all-natural latex hybrid mattress delivers breathable, responsive support while maintaining strict sustainability standards. Our testing team was impressed with its performance in nearly every category, awarding it a 4 out of 5 or higher in pressure relief, edge support, and responsiveness.
Latex mattresses are naturally springy and responsive, so they don’t always offer the deep, contouring “hug” that some sleepers need to relieve pressure in areas like the hips and shoulders. Fortunately, Birch Luxe delivers on the pressure relief front, earning an average score of 4.8 out of 5 in this category.
“My spine is very aligned on the Birch, with my hips and shoulders feeling level,” said mattress tester Riley Otis. “My shoulders and hips are getting just a bit of sinkage to evenly distribute my weight and prevent pressure from building up. I think this would be great for side sleepers who prefer a responsive mattress that is on the firmer side.”
The Birch Luxe’s high-quality, firm latex also provides consistent edge-to-edge support. The perimeter of the Birch Luxe is just as secure and responsive as the very center of the mattress, meaning you should feel aligned anywhere on the bed. Riley and her fellow mattress testers gave it 4.7 out of 5 in the edge support category.
“I don’t even need hands to assist me when standing up from the edge of the Birch,” Riley said. “I’m not sliding off, and the mattress has enough bounce to spring me out of bed without having to bear down on it.”
Our testers do a bounce test on a Birch Luxe Natural Mattress to measure the bed’s responsiveness.
Finally, for combination sleepers who toss and turn, the Birch Luxe’s responsiveness is its best strength, earning a 5 out of 5 in this category. Thanks to its naturally springy latex, this mattress makes moving around on it easy and comfortable.
Unfortunately, the Birch performed modestly in the cooling category, earning a 3 out of 5. Sleepers who are prone to overheating may prefer a mattress with more specialized cooling features. Additionally, the Birch Luxe Natural might be a touch too firm for sleepers under 130 pounds, who are less likely to get the same contouring as average-weight sleepers on this bed.
Read our full Birch Luxe Natural mattress review for a closer look at its performance and certifications. If you need an organic option with superior cooling, try out the Avocado Green mattress instead.
Weren’t able to find what you were looking for on the main list? These American-made honorable mentions could be a good fit for you, depending on your sleep needs.
The Saatva Rx is a fantastic option for sleepers who suffer from joint pain. During testing, it scored high marks in pressure relief, motion isolation, and responsiveness. However, it is one of Saatva’s high-end models, meaning it is much more expensive than the classic at $3,399 for a queen-sized mattress before any discounts. I chose the Saatva Classic instead because it is more affordable and offers better edge support and cooling, which should appeal to a broader spectrum of sleepers.
The WinkBed Plus is another solid option for sleepers weighing over 230 pounds. It impressed our testing team, scoring a 4 out of 5 or higher across the board. That said, the Titan Plus delivered similar performance at a few hundred dollars less than the WinkBed Plus, which is ultimately why I chose to include the Titan on my main list.
How We Picked and Tested These Mattresses
Every mattress featured on this list was tested and reviewed by our in-house product experts using a consistent set of criteria. We focused on real-world comfort factors to ensure our recommendations reflect how each bed performs for different body types and sleeping styles.
Edge Support
Mattresses with sturdy edge support are less likely to sag over time, especially along the perimeter. Reinforced sides enable you to sit, sleep, and move around without feeling unstable. To test this, our reviewers sit and lie along the border of each mattress to gauge stability during transitions, such as when getting in and out of bed.
We also perform a weighted sinkage test, using stacked weights of 99, 154, and 198 pounds to simulate the edge compression for different body types. Using a tape measure, we record the compression of the perimeter under each load.

Pressure Relief
Regardless of your preferred sleeping position, pressure relief is essential for avoiding aches, stiffness, and tension buildup. A well-designed mattress should support the spine while gently cushioning high-pressure zones, such as the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
Our testers of various body types lie on each mattress in multiple positions to determine how evenly it distributes weight and how effectively it cushions sensitive joints. Testers also note whether they feel “on top of” or “inside” the bed, as this can indicate how deeply the comfort layers contour to the body.
Cooling
Temperature regulation can significantly impact your comfort and sleep quality. Ideally, your mattress should maintain a neutral temperature to prevent overheating during the night.
To assess this, we use a thermal gun to measure the surface temperature of each mattress before and after five minutes of lying down. These readings help us visualize how well a mattress disperses body heat.
A look at the results of our thermal gun test.
Based on the total temperature increase, mattresses receive the following ratings:
5 degrees or less: Excellent
5 to 10 degrees: Good
10 to 15 degrees: Satisfactory
15 degrees or more: Poor
